Sony Xperia™ ZR: a quad-core, waterproof* smartphone [video]

Today, we’ve announced the new Xperia™ ZR, which closely follows on the heels of its bigger sibling, Xperia™ Z, with its waterproof* and dust-resistant capabilities. Xperia™ ZR comes equipped with a Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ S4 Pro quad-core 1.5 GHz processor, Adreno 320 GPU, 4.6” HD Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA® Engine 2, Android™ 4.1 (Jelly Bean), LTE, NFC, GLONASS, Battery STAMINA mode, and a 13 megapixel fast capture camera with HDR video and “Exmor RS™ for mobile”. Xperia™ ZR will launch in various global markets from Q2 2013 (availability will vary by market). Full specs are available after the jump.
Xperia™ ZR – quad core, 4.6” HD Reality Display with 13MP HDR camera, highest waterproof rating, and OptiContrast™ panelThe Xperia™ ZR comes with the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ S4 Pro platform, with a Krait APQ8064 1.5 GHz asynchronous quad-core processor, with an MDM9215 modem. The Snapdragon S4 class of processors is the first mobile processor to be manufactured using the latest 28nm process technology that provides advantages in frequency scaling, power consumption, and size reduction. The platform also incorporates the Adreno 320 GPU, for outstanding performance (up to 4x better than its predecessor) and graphics, better battery life, and improved multi-tasking. Xperia™ ZR has 2GB RAM.

The Xperia™ ZR boasts a 4.6” full HD, 1280x720px, Reality Display powered by Mobile BRAVIA® Engine 2. With the Mobile BRAVIA® Engine 2, Xperia™ ZR delivers an even better viewing experience than before by adding a new real-time contrast optimisation and improved sharpness enhancement on top of high quality colour management and noise reduction. You’ll also find a 13MP fast capture camera with “Exmor RS™ for mobile” image sensor. Exmor RS™ for mobile enables HDR (High dynamic range), an imaging technology used in Sony Cyber-shot™ digital cameras, so you’re able to capture photos and videos with great clarity, whether in strong backlight or in low light conditions. Xperia™ ZR also incorporates Superior Auto technology used in Sony Cyber-shot™ digital cameras. Superior Auto mode combines Scene Recognition with high quality performance image processing technology (HDR and noise reduction) to automatically shoot with the most optimal settings. A Burst mode also helps capture action fast, allowing you to shoot an unlimited number of images at 15 frames per second.

With the highest level of water-resistance rating along with full HD photo and video capabilities, you can easily use Xperia™ ZR to shoot pictures and capture video under water. As well as being dust and scratch resistant, this waterproof* phone has an IP55 and IP58 rating, so you can keep it submerged in 1.5 meters of fresh water for up to 30 minutes. With a dedicated camera key, you’ll be able to film in Full HD or take pictures underwater. The camera key also allows you to shoot even from a locked screen.
Xperia™ ZR is also designed with an OptiContrast™ panel, which reduces reflection and provides clearer viewing, even in direct sunlight. This also creates a seamless, black surface when the phone is turned off. And by eliminating the sensor layer and integrating the sensor on the lens, responsiveness of the screen is increased, so that your touch is more effective and more intuitive. Develop for Xperia™ ZRA wide range of Sony developer tools, tips, and tutorials are available for Xperia™ ZR. With the Sony Add-on SDK, you can also create app extensions for the in-built Small App functionality by using the Small App API. Plus, the Sony Add-on SDK also includes the option to develop apps for Sony SmartWatch and Sony SmartWireless Headset pro.

Announced today, the Stereo Bluetooth Headset SBH50 is an advanced, app-enabled wireless headset with built-in FM radio, OLED display and one-touch connection for wireless audio streaming. Simply touch the Xperia™ ZR once to the headset to instantly pair the devices and make a call or start listening to music.

Availability and coloursXperia™ ZR will launch in various global markets from Q2 2013 (availability will vary by market). The available colours are black, white, pink, and green.  The Stereo Bluetooth Headset SBH50 will be available globally in June 2013. The SBH50 is available in either black or white colour.
