HTC to launch touch screen-controlled 3.5G smartphone in September, say sources
High Tech Computer (HTC) is expected to launch its second touch screen-controlled smartphone supporting a 3.5G standard perhaps as soon as September, according to market sources.
The new smartphone is likely to be the P5500 (codenamed Nike) which the company unveiled in the first half of this year, indicated the sources, noting that the P5500 will be built using a CPU from Samsung Electronics and chipsets from Qualcomm, and supporting the WCDMA standard.
HTC is expected to enjoy a leading position for the earlier launch of a 3G/3.5G compliant touch screen smartphone since the 3G version of the iPhone is not expected to come until the first quarter of 2008, the sources noted.
Shipments of HTC's first touch screen smartphone, the HTC Touch, are expected to reach one million units by the end of this year, making the phone the most popular own-brand model ever for the company, the sources estimated.
In addition to the P5500, HTC is also expected to launch another touch screen-controlled 3G smartphone (codenamed Vogue) supporting the CDMA x1 EVDO standard for markets in North America as well as Central and South America, said the sources.
