Karnataka: No mobiles for under 16s

In a new rule that is sure to create a furore among students, the Karnataka government has banned the sale of mobile phones to children below the age of 16 years.

The state government has also banned the use of mobile phones in schools and colleges. The move comes after concerns over the adverse impact it would have on children who were frequently using mobile phones.

Education Minister Basavaraj Horatti said that it would be the schools and the parents who would have to be responsible for any consequences in case of a violation of the ban.

However, it is still unclear as to how the sale of phones across the state could actually be restricted or regulated.
