3 teams up with Skype
3 is believed to have teamed up with eBay-owned software company Skype to develop a handset which gives customers free mobile internet calls.
A 3 spokesman said: '3 and a leading internet communications company are working together to produce an exciting new product to make free internet calls completely mobile. The move marks a radical step forward in operator thinking and will mobilise internet calls for a mass market.
'It will also close the gap between internet communications and mobile calling and is something you won't see from any other operator.'
It is widely believed that the unnamed company is Skype, which has around 2.5 million users in Britain. 3 believes the service will attract new users onto the network, despite the fact that internet call services have not taken off.
