AT&T and Nokia Siemens Networks Kick Off 2008 IMS Research Competition at Georgia Institute of Technology
Students will create cutting edge mobile applications using state of the art network equipment to compete for cash prizes and internships
ATLANTA, Nov. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AT&T and Nokia Siemens Networks have begun the second year of the IMS Research Competition for undergraduate and post-graduate students at the Georgia Institute of Technology. The goal of the competition is to research, build, and prototype next-generation mobile applications using an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) platform -- a network communications platform delivered by AT&T and Nokia Siemens Networks. The competition will begin in the Spring semester 2008.
Student teams will compete in one of three categories: Innovation, Higher Education, and Contextual Usage -- all categories have been identified as key growth areas in the wireless communications industry. Students will have unparalleled access to commercial-grade network equipment supplied by Nokia Siemens Networks. The IMS lab is located in the Georgia Electronic Design Center (GEDC), and is co-operated by
GTMobilesphere and participating vendors. In addition to the application prototype, students will be judged on a business plan outlining how they would market and launch their application.
Students are competing for $45,000 in cash prizes to be divided among each category, and up to eight internships at AT&T and Nokia Siemens Networks, two of the world's leading companies in their respective fields.
"Georgia Tech is thrilled that AT&T and Nokia Siemens Networks are again offering our students the opportunity to innovate in one of the most dynamic areas of technology today," said Ron Hutchins, Associate Vice Provost for Research and Technology and Chief Technology Officer at Georgia Tech. "Real world experience is critical to the success of our students, and this competition offers them the rare opportunity to work with industry leaders and state of the art technology that very few academic institutions have access to today."
Representatives from AT&T, Nokia Siemens Networks and Georgia Tech will host a kickoff event to formally announce the competition to students on November 28, 4 p.m. - 6 p.m., at the Technology Square Research Building at Georgia Tech. The event will feature a panel of technical and marketing experts from AT&T, Nokia Siemens Networks and Georgia Tech who will supply insight on the communications industry to help students prepare for both the technical and business aspects of the competition.
