Global Mobile to cooperate on WiMAX with Japan-based OpenWin
Global Mobile, a WiMAX operating licensee for the northern region of Taiwan, said on November 26 that it has signed a letter of intent with Japan-based Open Wireless Network (OpenWin) for cooperation in roaming services, technology exchange as well as the development of digital content and new application services.
The cooperation plan, however, will become valid only when OpenWin is able to secure a WiMAX operating license in Japan in a bidding scheduled for the end of this year, according to sources at Global Mobile.
OpenWin, which has major shareholders, including mobile service provider SoftBank and Internet service provider eAccess, may also commit equity investment in Global Mobile once it obtains a WiMAX license, the sources added.
