Samsung official projects growth in use of 3G phones

EVEN though usage of third technology (3G) mobile phones is lower than expected, next year it would become a standard handset, an official of Samsung Electronics said.

Fe Varrilla of Samsung Electronics Philippines Inc. said this is reason the company decided to offer 3G mobile phones in the country.

Citing a report by international research firm GFK, Varilla said 3G mobile phones, those that are capable of high-speed video streaming and downloading, as well as video calls, will be more common in 2008.

“As of now, the usage is very low compared to what was expected,” she said in an interview with the press during the opening of the Samsung Concept Shop at Ayala Center Cebu last Wednesday.

Trend

She noted that even though very few people use the 3G function of their mobile phones, many still buy such unit.

“It has become the trend. So we decided to tap it,” she said, adding that Samsung will be introducing a 3G mobile phone for as low as P7,000 next month.

She said Samsung will not only introduce 3G mobile phones but those that use 3.5G technology or high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA), which enables download speeds equivalent to assymetrical digital subscriber line (ADSL) connections, in the Philippines.

HSDPA phones are able to download content from the Internet faster than 3G phones.

Varilla said Samsung is confident it will be able to widen the gap with its competitors with the introduction of more advanced mobile phones.

Invest

She said Samsung, which invests about 10 percent of its earnings on research and development, produces about 20 new mobile phones every quarter.

She said a recent GFK report revealed that Samsung is presently second to Nokia globally with a 24 percent share of the market in the Philippines. She added that the same study shows that Samsung’s largest market is in Cebu (20 percent of the entire country).

Varilla also said the most popular Samsung phone in the market is the E250, a VGA (video graphics array or phone with colored display), which is offered by dealers for a little over P6,000.

The Samsung Concept Shop features the Korean company's latest products, ranging from LCD and SlimFit TVs, MP3 players, digital cameras and mobile p the DTI will ask manufacturers, retailers or distributors for a breakdown of each product’s component cost, Bation said.
