AsureWave to focus on production of GPS SiP modules in 2008

AsureWave Technologies, a subsidiary of Asustek Computer, will pay more attention to the development of GPS SiP (system in package) modules for handsets due to increasing demand, according to company president Ted Lee. The company previously focused on WLAN SiP modules.

AsureWave has also been shipping wireless SiP modules from its own plant in China since September, Lee indicated, noting that together with support from its contract makers, AsureWave currently is able to ship three million wireless SiP modules a month.

While the demand for handset-use built-in WLAN modules is likely to top 50-60 million units in 2007, WLAN SiP modules will account for only a 15-20% share of the segment, Lee indicated.

Samsung Electronics and Sony Ericsson are more willing to build their handsets with built-in WLAN SiP modules, but High Tech Computer (HTC) and Motorola still prefer to use on-board architecture for WLAN connectivity, Lee explained.

AsureWave will also engage in the development built-in SiP modules for GPS, DVB-T and DVB-H applications in 2008, Lee added.
