HTC denies that operations in 1Q08 will be affected by Qualcomm chipset shortages
High Tech Computer (HTC) on December 24 rebuked a media report stating that company revenues for the first quarter of 2008 would be affected by shortages in the supply of chipsets from Qualcomm. Instead, HTC claimed that its operations in the first quarter of next year will not be affected fundamentally.
While acknowledging that there is an overall tight supply of handset components in the global market, HTC stated that it has secured sufficient parts and components and that its production will not be jeopardized.
Meanwhile, the tight supply of Qualcomm chipset solutions is expected to be relieved in January 2008 following a capacity ramp at Qualcomm, according to a top executive of Qualcomm Taiwan.
Strong demand for 3G handsets and a rapid increase of Qualcomm's share in the WCDMA chipset segment caused the chipset shortages starting in the fourth quarter of this year, said the Qualcomm official.
Qualcomm has been cooperating with HTC to improve the situation week by week, and so the impact on HTC's operations will be limited, stated the official.
