Phones with zoom and 5-megapixel resolution may become mainstream, say Taiwan makers

Cellphones equipped with 5-megapixel zoom lenses may become mainstream in the camera handset market in one to two years, according to sources in Taiwan's optical lenses industry.

While camera phones equipped with 1.3-megapixel or 2-megapixel non-zoom lenses are mainstream currently, Samsung Electronics will launch its 920SC, a new slider camera phone equipped with a 5-megapixel, 3x optical zoom lens, in Japan at the end of December and Sony Ericsson will offer a model, the SO905iCS, with the same features in 2008, the sources pointed out.

According to the Photonics Industry and Technology Development Association (PIDA) in Taiwan, there are two lines of development for phone camera lenses: precision-molded aspherical glass single lens units or units made of multiple plastic lenses that can zoom and are suitable for resolutions of five megapixels or more.

Taiwan-based Largan Precision and Asia Optical have been developing 3-megapixel phone camera lenses, the industry sources noted.
