Taiwan makers voice concerns over Sprint Nextel WiMAX unit
Taiwan-based WiMAX equipment makers have expressed concerns about a potential spin off of Sprint Nextel's WiMAX unit. The makers stated that the uncertainty over the unit's future could delay the implementation of WiMAX networks by service providers which were originally slated for 2008.
The worries came after a number of media outlets began reporting that Sprint Nextel's board is considering a number of options for its WiMAX unit, including spinning off the division or trying to attract strategic investors to take over the unit, according to industry sources in Taiwan.
While refraining to directly comment on the WiMAX project, the sources stated that any changes brought to Sprint Nextel's US$5 billion WiMAX project would have a negative impact on the global telecom industry, including forcing global telecom operators to switch to other 4G technologies, including Long Term Evolution (LTV).
The shift from WiMAX to LTV or other technologies would not be good news for Taiwan makers who have mostly bet on WiMAX products, the sources claimed.
