"UIQ 3: The Complete Guide" – new book and Wiki
The new "UIQ 3: The Complete Guide" aims to be the most comprehensive guide available for developing UIQ 3 applications, yet it is a book with a twist. The printed version of the book will be available from Symbian Press during Q1 2008, however the first four chapters are available now in Wiki format on UIQ Technology's Developer Community website.
Full texts available as a Wiki
The Wiki version includes full chapter texts and is currently read-only. Once all the remaining chapters are added, the Wiki will be opened up for the developer community to edit and contribute new material, fuelling future editions of the book.
The sections available online now are:
- Introduction, background and UIQ 3 basics
- Development environment and quick start
- List boxes
- Commands and categories
- Building an application
- Visit the UIQ 3: Complete Guide Wiki here>>
One book, two formats
Richard Bloor from SymbianOne.com spoke to Jens Greve, Head of Sony Ericsson Developer World, and Mark Wright, managing editor of the book project. Here Jens Greve outlines the thinking behind publishing both a printed and online version of the book:
"Developers in emerging economies, such as India and China, often can't afford the cover price of a book that is considered acceptable by developers in Europe or the USA," says Jens. "To address this we will be creating a Chinese translation and issuing that in hard copy at a price point for the Chinese market in 2008. But before that we will be making the English version of the entire book available online."
Responding to Richard Bloor's comments on this approach adversely impacting book sales, Jens continues:
"I don't see this dual approach as a risk," says Jens. "We know many developers prefer the convenience of a hardcopy reference they can keep on their desks. So we see the electronic version as complementary. As such it will make the book available to anyone who is interested in UIQ 3 development and cater for individual preferences."

Broad-based authoring team
The book is by and for professional UIQ 3 developers, based on real-life practical experiences, and goes beyond standard developer documentation. Drawing from a broad field of specialists, the project team features John Holloway, CTO of ZingMagic Ltd, as lead author, Matthew Hunt, Enterprise and Partner Support for UIQ at Sony Ericsson and Simon Judge, freelance mobile software developer and author of Sony Ericsson's six-part getting started with UIQ 3 tutorial series. The book project is further supported with contributions by other experts from Sony Ericsson, UIQ Technology and Motorola.
The "UIQ 3: The Complete Guide" project is supported by Symbian Press and financed by Sony Ericsson.
