Orange France Sells 70,000 Iphones in December
France Telecom says that it's mobile arm, Orange sold over 70,000 Apple iPhones during the month of December, which was in line with projections of sales of between 50,000 to 100,000 units. The handset was launched into the French market at the end of November.
The figure conceals a downward trend though, as the bulk of the sales - some 30,000 units - were sold in just the first five days of launch. Considering that December was the peak gift purchasing time, it seems that the iPhone may not be as appealing to the those who are not hardcore Apple fans.
According to an AFP newswire report, nearly half (48%) of the sales were to new subscribers to the Orange network and less than 3,500 handsets were formally purchased unlocked, although doubtless a fair percentage of locked phones were later unlocked.
