Bilbao Steps Up City Security With Motorola

Spanish city to benefit from new integrated public safety TETRA communication system

BILBAO, Spain. – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) announced it has been selected by local integrator, Radiotrans, to deliver an urban TErrestrial Trunked RAdio (TETRA) communications network across the city of Bilbao in Spain. This secure cross-functional communication network will help ensure faster and easier collaboration between Bilbao’s public safety and emergency services. The contract includes an initial 700 TETRA terminals.

Motorola will deploy its full Dimetra IP network, providing efficient and reliable communication channels between emergency services teams such as fire, ambulance and police, as well as the city airport. Other users who will benefit from the new system include the public and private transportation sectors that are heavily dependent on real-time interaction for the management of daily operations. Around 2,000 public safety workers are expected to use the network, helping to serve Bilbao’s 500,000 citizens.

“Safety of our citizens is of paramount importance, which is why we have chosen to upgrade our public communications network to an advanced digital system,” said Manu Zarragoitia, public safety director at Bilbao Municipality. “We selected the Motorola Dimetra TETRA solution as it has a proven track record in meeting the needs of not only public safety users but also other critical users such as municipal and transportation organizations. Also, we were impressed with the proven voice and data capabilities running over a secure and robust infrastructure. Our emergency service groups will be able to collaborate and integrate in a way that was not possible before.”

The Dimetra IP system is a highly scalable TETRA Over IP solution that offers a more resilient, robust and reliable network for seamless communication amongst users. It supports voice, telephony, messaging and data services that enable mobile applications such as database enquiries and image transmission on a single network, quickly and securely.
