Motorola Proves Power and Flexibility of Switched Digital Video Platform in a Multi-vendor Environment
Multi-QAM, Multi-Guide demonstration at the CableLabs winter conference highlights open design of market-leading bandwidth-saving technology
Horsham, PA - Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) marked another technology first with the demonstration of its switched digital video platform in a multi-vendor network environment. The demonstration will be unveiled at the CableLabs winter conference and will show platform compatibility with multiple electronic program guides (EPGs) and open standard QAM devices including products from Harmonic and ARRIS and Motorola's SEM and APEX.
To date Motorola has switched digital video commitments from cable operators for more than twenty four million homes, more than twice the amount of any other vendor on the market. An open platform is critical to customers who are looking to implement switched digital technology as a cost-effective means for increasing network bandwidth. With Motorola’s switched digital solution, operators can expand their high-definition content, niche channel offerings and on-demand services while leveraging equipment and technology already in place from a wide range of manufacturers.
“Switched digital video is one of the first tools that operators are reaching for in an effort to increase bandwidth availability,” said Buddy Snow, Senior Director, On Demand Video, Motorola. “By delivering an open switched digital platform, Motorola is accelerating operators’ ability to generate new revenue from advanced consumer offerings like HDTV and video on demand as well as from high-value advertising services.”
"We have been performing interoperability testing with Motorola's SDV software since its early stages," said ARRIS Senior Director of Business Development Jeff Brooks. "While we may compete in different areas, it has always been our common goal to provide choice and flexibility to better serve the cable industry’s customers.”
“The demonstration of this multi-vendor switched digital video environment is further validated by our current in-field deployments," added Gil Katz, Director of Cable Solutions and Strategy at Harmonic Inc. "The flexibility presented by the ability to leverage existing edge QAMs alongside the latest universal edge technologies, using both to deliver SDV and VOD, further builds the business case for deploying SDV."
Motorola delivers a complete portfolio of narrowcast solutions, from encryption to edge management, and from video-on-demand to switched digital video. The company’s fully redundant, end-to-end switched digital solution includes switched broadcast capabilities, monitoring functions reaching down to individual set-tops in a service group, and edge management functionality for sharing network resources among narrowcast services. Motorola’s platform gives operators the foundation for a future switched unicast model where each subscriber has access to his or her own personalized video stream.
