Arima Communications to kick off production at Wujiang handset plant in March

The new handset plant of Arima Communications in Wujiang, China will commence commercial production at the end of March with a monthly capacity of 1.2-1.7 million units, according to company sources.

Handsets for Sony Ericsson, LG Electronics and Sharp will be manufactured at the new Wujiang plant, while Arima's existing plant in Yingko, Taiwan will focus on the production of smartphones, the sources indicated.

This year, Arima is expected to ship 10-12 million handsets to Sony Ericsson and deliver 3-4 million handsets to LG, according to estimates by market sources in Taiwan.

LG is expected to outsource production for a total of eight handsets in 2008, with seven models being subcontracted to Arima, said market sources, noting that three models – the KP220, 320 and 199 – will start shipping in the first half and another four handsets, including two ultra low-cost models and a 5-megapixel device, will be delivered in the second half.

In addition, Arima will also begin volume shipments of 2G handsets to Sharp in April, the sources added.

With shipments of smartphones to Taiwan-based E-Ten Information Systems and WMG and i-mate, Arima is expected to ship a total of 15-17 million handsets in 2008, up 50% from 2007, the sources estimated.
