HP increases hardware recycling volume by over 60% in Asia Pacific & Japan

HP (NYSE, Nasdaq: HPQ) Asia Pacific and Japan (APJ) today announced that it has recycled 5,897 tonnes of hardware and supplies in the Asia Pacific region. This is a 61.8 per cent increase for the amount of hardware recycled over the previous year and the equivalent of 655 truckloads1 of material entering landfills.

"We welcome this encouraging news and the fact that programs in this region have contributed to HP meeting our recycling goal last year to recycle one billion pounds of electronic equipment and printing supplies. We are confident that we will continue the momentum in the Asia Pacific region to positively contribute to our new goal of recovering another billion pounds by 2010," said Jean-Claude Vanderstraeten, Environment Director, HP APJ.

This success is largely due to the various initiatives undertaken in the region. Since 2005, HP has been the founding member of the computer recycling program, Byteback, in Australia. In 2007, HP continued its support for Byteback's second phase, when a new recycling site was opened and more vendors were encouraged to support the program.

In China, HP extended the recycling program beyond corporate customers to include consumers and small and medium-sized businesses. As of September 2007, customers can drop off HP-branded technology at HP service centres located in 31 major cities throughout China.

In November 2007, HP ran an employee recycling drive in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines. HP encouraged its employees to bring end-of-life personal technology equipment to 17 designated collection points at HP offices, providing for environmentally responsible disposal.

Prior to this in April, HP had its first ever National Recycling Week in Singapore. This resulted in HP and the public coming together to save 14.5 tonnes of used computer hardware from becoming landfill.

In addition to hardware programs, HP continues to offer customers the ability to return their HP printing supplies for environmentally-sound recycling through the HP Planet Partners Program. HP's state-of-the-art processes ensure that returned HP printing supplies are recycled responsibly. It is free and is available in 45 different countries and territories around the world including Australia2, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan.

Last year marked the twentieth anniversary of the inception of HP's recycling programs. The programs seek to reduce the environmental impact of IT products, minimise waste going to landfills and help customers conveniently discard products in an environmentally sound fashion.

In addition to recycling, HP offers a variety of product end-of-life management services. This includes HP's Asset Recovery Services. The program covers buy-back, trade-in, leasing arrangements and refurbishment and recycling services. This helps HP's commercial customers to retire older or obsolete IT equipment in a way that helps safeguard their proprietary information and complies with applicable environmental laws.
