Taiwan market: Skype to cooperate with 3G operators to offer mobile service

Skype plans to offer a mobile Skype service available on customized handsets in the Taiwan market and is negotiating cooperation with one or two local operators of 3G mobile communication services, according to Internet Communications Services vice president Robert Lo for PChome Online the Taiwan operating agent of Skype.

The mobile Skype service allows voice calls from a Skype handset to another Skype handset or a PC-based Skype phone, Lo pointed out. Skype has cooperated with Hutchison 3G UK (3 UK) to offer the service in the UK market at a monthly rate of ₤10 (US$19.95), Lo indicated. The monthly rate for the Taiwan market will be lower than NT$600 (US$19.68), Lo noted.

Considering the mobile Skype service will reduce 3G operators' revenues from voice communications, Skype has not talked about cooperation with Taiwan' top-three operators (Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile, Far EasTone Telecommunications), Lo pointed out. Since there are only five 3G operators in Taiwan, Skype's potential partner is either Asia Pacific Telecom or Vibo Telecom or both, according to industry sources.

Launched in Taiwan at the end of 2004, Skype currently has nearly 300,000 chargeable members and about 2,700 business users, Lo indicated. The operation of Skype in Taiwan turned to profitability in June 2006, Lo noted.
