Motorola to End Singapore Manufacturing
Motorola Inc. will wind up its mobile phone-manufacturing operations in Singapore by the end of this year, resulting in the loss of 700 jobs.
Singapore will, however, continue to be a key site for the company's regional management activities, research and development and software-development.
Spokeswoman Mary Lamb said Motorola's headcount in Singapore, its regional headquarters, will fall to 1,800 from 2,500 after mobile phone production is shut down.
"As part of its strategic review of business operations, which includes a previously announced global $500 million cost-reduction initiative, the company will begin a phased transition of its mobile phone manufacturing operations from Singapore to other Motorola facilities worldwide," the company said.
Another spokeswoman declined to comment when asked if the company will reduce manufacturing capacity elsewhere in the region.
