Taiwan market: TWM launches handset recycling scheme

Taiwan Mobile (TWM) on March 31 announced an environmental protection imitative in which it will collect scrap handsets for recycling at its 506 retail outlets throughout Taiwan.

The recycling of 66,000 old handsets can produce one kilogram of gold and that of 97,000 handsets can generate one kilogram of silver, TWM quoted statistics by the Japan-based Telecommunications Carriers Association (TCA) as saying. As much as 60-80% of the materials, including metal, glass and plastics, in each handset are recyclable, TWM pointed out. There are about seven million new handsets sold in Taiwan per year and currently only 20% of them are recycled, TWM indicated. For scrap handsets which are not recycled, disposal at either incinerators or landfills pollutes the air and/or contaminates soil, TWM noted.

TWM has signed with All Right Consultant & Development, a local recycling agent, with the contract requiring that none of scrap handsets be transported for resale, TWM emphasized.
