Commentary: Nokia to lead in global mobile navigation device market

Nokia aims to sell 35 million GPS-enabled handsets in 2008 and is expected to soon outperform the current market leaders to become the number one vendor in the global mobile navigation product (including PND and GPS handsets) market.

Nokia's target numbers are close to the combined shipment figures projected by the current three leading vendors – Garmin, TomTom and Mio.

In 2008, Garmin is expected to ship about 16-18 million PND devices, TomTom targets to ship 14-15 million PND products, and Mio is projecting to sell another eight million own-brand navigation products.

In fact, Nokia jumped to second place in the mobile navigation device market in the Asia Pacific in the first quarter of 2008, from the fourth position in the previous quarter, according to global market research firm Canalys. Nokia can be expected to become the top vendor in the Asia Pacific as early as the second quarter.

Additionally, by leveraging its close ties with mobile operators in Europe, Nokia is also expected to replace TomTom as the largest vendor of mobile navigation products in Europe by the end of the year.

However, it could take Nokia a bit longer to out pace Garmin in the North America market where Nokia is currently relatively weak in terms of marketing.
