Competition for smartphone third ranking heating up
A number of handset vendors, including High Tech Computer (HTC), Apple, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and LG Electronics, are likely to compete for the third ranking in the global smartphone segment in 2008, according to market sources in Taiwan.
According to IDC data, Nokia shipped 60 million smartphones in 2007, accounting for the largest share, at 48%, in the global smartphone segment. RIM (Research in Motion) followed with shipments totaling 12.26 million units for a 9.8% market share.
HTC shipped 3.63 million smartphones in 2007 and was ranked as the tenth largest smartphone vendor, the IDC data showed.
However, for the fourth quarter of 2007, HTC shipped 1.85 million smartphones to take up the fifth position in the smartphone segment, trailing after only Nokia, RIM, Motorola and Apple, the data indicated.
Now that Orange has begun selling HTC-branded handsets and Sprint Nextel has started offering Sprint-HTC dual-brand models, HTC is expected to see its market share in the segment increase substantially in 2008, according to market sources in Taiwan.
