Handsets with dual MEMS microphones to hit market in 1Q09
Handsets with dual MEMS (micro electro-mechanical systems) microphones from the world's top-five handset vendors are expected to hit the market in the first quarter of 2009, according to sources at MEMS microphone makers.
The dual MEMS microphones will enter the handset development design-in stage at all top-tier handset vendors in the third quarter of this year, allowing the vendors to launch handsets at the end of the first quarter, or early in the second quarter, of 2009, the sources noted.
Shipments of MEMS microphones for handsets grew 60% on year to 430 million units in 2007, and are expected to hit one billion units by 2011, accounting for 70% of the global handset-use microphone market, the sources cited data from market research firms as saying.
