MediaTek launches single-chip solution for sub-US$30 handsets
MediaTek has come out with a single chip solution for the sub-US$30 handset segment, the Taiwan-based IC design house revealed at an investors conference held recently.
The single-chip solution also incorporates a 100,000-pixel CMOS image sensor making MediaTek one of the first to introduce camera functionality to the low-cost handset segment, market watchers pointed out.
Although MediaTek did not specify its target markets for the new handset solution, market sources in Taiwan believe China-based white-box handset makers are likely to be the company's main focus.
Due to the entry-level camera functionality, the sales impact to international handset IC players who target leading brand vendors such as Nokia, Motorola and Samsung Electronics, will be limited, the sources noted.
