WiMAX Telecom to finalize suppliers for WiMAX equipment in June
WiMAX Telecom, a WiMAX licensee for the northern region of Taiwan, expects to finalize its suppliers for WiMAX equipment, mainly base stations, in June, with plans to strive to kick off its WiMAX service in the third quarter of this year, according to the company.
The company plans to choose two suppliers from five contenders, including its major shareholder Tecom, the company said. Market sources indicated that Tecom will eventually be chosen as one of the two winning suppliers.
WiMAX Telecom plans to initially install 300 WiMAX base stations in Taipei City and will expand the number of its base stations to 1,100 when its WiMAX services are able to fully cover its business area in the northern part of Taiwan, the company indicated.
In addition, the company plans to demonstrate a trial WiMAX network in the area surrounding the Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park (HSIP) during the Computex IT trade show from June 3-7, said the company.
In other news, First International Telecom (Fitel), another WiMAX licensee for the northern part of Taiwan, said that it will install 450 base stations in the Taipei and Hsinchu areas for the Taiwan government-based Mobile Taiwan (M-Taiwan) program. Fitel plans to apply to transfer the base stations installed under the M-Taiwan program into commercial use in the first quarter of 2009 when the company starts implementing its WiMAX service.
