Compal Communications lowers handset shipment target for 2008
Compal Communications has lowered the target of its handset shipments for 2008 from 60 million units to 48 million units due to slack demand from its main client Motorola, according to company chairman Ray Chen.
In 2007, Compal twice cut its shipment target, first lowering the figure from 75 million units to 55 million units, and then further to 50 million units before concluding the year with total shipments of 47.8 million units.
Although Compal has recently added Nokia and LG Electronics to its client list, shipments of handsets to the two new clients are not expected to begin until the end of 2008, making Motorola still the primary source of revenues for Compal this year.
Compal shipped 10.7 million handsets in the first quarter of 2008 and the company expected its shipment volume for the second quarter to stay flat with that of the previous quarter.
