Compal Communications and Arima Communications have mixed shipment performance in 1H08
The two leading Taiwan ODM handset makers, Compal Communications and Arima Communications, had mixed shipment performances in the second quarter of this year, according to information provided by sources at the companies.
Compal's handset shipments declined 12.1% on quarter to 9.4 million units in the second quarter, and the company's total handset shipments of 20.1 million units for the first half of this year accounted for 41.9% of its revised shipment target of 48 million units for 2008.
On the other hand, Arima saw its handset shipments expand 29.4% sequentially to 3.08 million in the second quarter, said company sources. For the first half of this year, its handset shipments totaled 5.46 million units, accounting for 36.4% of Arima's shipment target of 15 million units for 2008.
Although Sony Ericsson, the largest client of Arima, has issued a warning over its profitability for the second quarter, Arima's increasing shipments of handsets to LG Electronics will help offset the negative impact from Sony Ericsson, according to market sources.
Sony Ericsson accounted for 54.8% of Arima's total revenues in 2007 compared to 73% in 2006, the sources indicated.
In other news, Compal saw its revenues decline 33.5% on year to NT$17.63 billion (US$579.9 million) in the first half of this year, whereas Arima saw its revenues surge 34.7% on year to NT$8.36 billion during the same period, according to data of the companies.
