Finnish Minister of Communications visits Budapest R&D hub connecting 600 million people worldwide
Nokia Siemens Networks’ development site has played a critical role in the development of global communications
Ms Suvi Lindén, Finland’s Minister of Communications, visited Nokia Siemens Networks’ R&D Centre in Budapest, and praised the pioneering work carried out at the site over the last 10 years.
Work at the R&D site has been highly influential in the development of communications over the last decade, with products and services developed at this center being deployed in over 80 countries and reaching about 600 million subscribers.
”Finland is proud of its history in the field of technology R&D and Nokia Siemens Networks continues to maintain the tradition by leveraging off the expertise and knowledge of talented engineers available all over the world. Hungary is an important part of Nokia Siemens Networks’ success in this area and I have been highly impressed by what I have seen at the R&D Centre in Budapest. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that Budapest has been named the headquarters of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology”- said Ms Lindén.
Robert Esik, Head of Finance of Nokia Siemens Networks in Hungary pointed out that a combination of location and the availability of an exceptional pool of talented and competitive professionals has enabled Hungary to meet the expectations of business innovation in international markets.
”Nokia Siemens Networks welcomes the EU decision to headquarter the EIT in Budapest reiterating its own vision of Budapest as the new technology hub of Europe. We are committed to further develop the information communications industry in Hungary, and are looking forward to cooperating in new projects with the EIT” – added Robert Esik.
Nokia Siemens Networks employs 800 people in the country. Research and Development plays a key role for Nokia Siemens Networks in Hungary with over 50% of its staff there working in this area.
The Nokia Siemens Networks’ operation in Budapest has developed close relationships with Hungarian universities excelling in innovative technologies such as the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (www.bme.hu) and Eötvös Loránd University of Sciences (www.elte.hu). As part of this agreement Nokia Siemens Networks’ Cooperative Education Program provides opportunities for hundreds of undergraduates to take part in R&D activities and gain practical experience within the Nokia Siemens Networks Labs in Budapest. The company invested almost 1 million Euros in Hungarian graduate studies in 2007, and is ready to further pursue efforts in this area with the support of the Hungarian state.
Nokia Siemens Networks’ R&D Centre in Budapest is home to the number one Mobile Switching Server (MSS) in the world enabling telecom operators to significantly reduce cost of voice telephony using IP technology. Its product has been deployed in over 80 countries reaching about 600 million subscribers.
