China handset production to top 605 million units in 2008, says CCID

The production volumes of handsets in China are expected to top 605 million units in 2008 compared to the 550 million units produced in 2007, according to data released from China-based CCID Consulting.

About 400 million units, or 66%, of total handsets produced in China this year will be exported to overseas markets, with the remaining 205 million units sold in the domestic market in China, CCID indicated.

In the first half of this year, the production of handsets in China reached 279 million units, with the world's top-five vendors - Nokia, Samsung Electronics, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and LG Electronics - accounting for 65% of total production, down from the 70-80%% recorded in the past two years, said the CCID.

In other news, sales of handsets in China reached 96.4 million units in the January-June period this year, up 17.5% from the same period of last year, said the CCID, noting that handset sales in China are expected to top 200 million units in the entire year of 2008.
