China TD-SCDMA subscriber volumes falling short of expectations

The number of TD-SCDMA subscribers in China is expected to reach 2.31 million by the end of 2008, falling substantially short of the optimistic projection of 20-50 million subscribers by market sources in China, according to the latest estimation by China-based market research firm CCID Consulting.

Since China Mobile launched TD-SCDMA trial operation in early April, the company has so far attracted slightly over 50,000 subscribers plus 8,000 trial business users, CCID noted.

Although more than 40 TD-SCDMA enabled handsets have received a network access license in China, only a few models are being sold in the channel, limiting the sales of TD-SCDMA phones, according to sources at Taiwan handset industry.

In addition, the TD-SCDMA handsets currently available in the market have only limited multimedia functions, while the data transmission speeds of most models are also not fast enough, and therefore, pushing consumers in China to adopt a wait-and-see attitude toward TD-SCDMA handsets, the sources added.
