TPO to expand its 3.5G capacity
Taiwan low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) TFT LCD panel maker TPO Displays is going to expand its 3.5G production capacity, with the company estimating the new capacity will come online in the first quarter of 2009.
TPO only has one 3.5G production line, and it has reached full capacity since the second half of 2007. This year, despite weak demand for small-to-medium size panels in the first half of this year, the company is still running at full capacity. The company estimates its monthly capacity will increase from 75,000 substrates to 83,000 substrates once the new capacity comes online, according to market sources.
Despite weakening market demand for small-to-medium size panel and falling DSC panel price, TPO's monthly sales did not fall too far below NT$2 billion (US$64 million) in the second quarter, thanks to stable orders from world wide handset vendors such as Nokia, according to the market sources. Overall sales are expected to improve in August, the sources noted.
