Get it under control: Opera and AwoX create home network solution
Opera Software today announced its cooperation with AwoX, provider of network media solutions around the globe for consumer electronics. By combining their technologies, Opera Devices SDK and AwoX Controller SDK, Opera and AwoX offer a solution for creating powerful user interfaces in compliance with the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) interoperability guidelines. Together, the two companies can deliver a single application to browse the Internet, home network and play protected video-on-demand content. As both Opera and AwoX support a wide range of embedded platforms, this joint solution applies to devices such as set-top boxes, connected TVs and mobile Internet devices.
During IBC 2008, Opera will demonstrate an "Awox Widget" (a UPnP control point), running on Archos 605 PMP and a Lyngbox set-top box, which will act as a universal remote control for the other devices in the DLNA network.
"The natural next step in pooling Awox and Opera technologies is to create solutions for remote user-interface applications based on the CEA-2014 standard. This means that devices in the home network will not only provide media content, but also the presentation engine," said Alain Molinie, CEO, AwoX. "The number of DLNA-certified devices continues to grow, resulting in a greater need for compliant solutions, such as the one from Opera and AwoX."
"It is definitely the right time for Opera and AwoX to come together to create a solution to meet the needs of a growing market. We are natural partners, as we both place a high priority on standards compliance and the support of multiple platforms," says Jon von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software. "Together, we hope that we will make it easier and faster for content to come alive on consumer electronic devices."
