More companies to conduct IOT for WiMAX products with Huawei, say sources

Efforts by China-based Huawei Technologies to push the development of WiMAX industry worldwide have attracted more companies to conduct interoperability testing (IOT) with Huawei, with an aim to join the WiMAX ecosystem established by the China telecom network solutions provider, according to sources at Taiwan network-equipment makers.

Citing data from IDC, Huawei claimed that it led rival telecom network equipment providers worldwide by securing 17 new commercial WiMAX 16e contracts in the first half of 2008, more than the total number of contracts it signed in 2007.

As of the first half of this year, Huawei said that it has secured 29 commercial WiMAX 16e contracts and also accumulated 35 trial WiMAX contracts.

Although combined commercial and trial WiMAX contracts landed by Huawei so far still lagged behind those secured by Alcatel-Lucent, Nortel Networks and Motorola, Huawei has significantly increased its presence in the WiMAX market, market sources in Taiwan said.

According to the sources, WiMAX chip makers, including Runcom, Sequans, and GCT Semiconductor, and WiMAX CPE makers such as Zyxel Communications and Asustek Computer, are now conducting IOT for their products with Huawei.
