Motorola Introduces Adaptive Media Management to Accelerate Delivery of Next Generation On Demand Experiences

New hybrid solid-state server technology and content distribution software enable Video Service Providers to better meet consumer demands as viewing habits shift from ‘primetime to my time’

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands – International Broadcast Conference (IBC) – 12 September 2008 – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced enhancements to its on demand portfolio that leverage adaptive media management (AMM). AMM is a technology framework that creates a flexible, cost-effective platform for the delivery of on demand services including video on demand (VOD), time-shifted television and on demand advertising. The platform enables Motorola’s video service provider (VSP) customers to adapt rapidly to changing content usage patterns while optimizing storage, streaming and network costs. Subscribers will benefit from increased content choice and greater service reliability.

On demand content libraries are rapidly expanding as VSPs seek to gain competitive advantage by offering consumers greater choice in VOD content and time-shifted TV experiences. At the same time, increased customer choice means that viewership is more widely distributed and traditional concurrency rules no longer apply. Rather than a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to managing and storing content, Motorola’s AMM proactively and reactively manages the placement of content within the network and identifies and assigns the most effective streaming and storage technology (DRAM, Flash, Disk and network attached storage (NAS) / storage area networks (SAN)).

The ODM2000 is Motorola’s next generation, on demand media blade, designed to improve the performance, scalability and reliability of the company’s market-leading B1 video server. The ODM2000 is an industry-first, hybrid solid-state ingest and streaming module that supports a configurable cache of both DRAM and Flash memory, designed to effectively support the full range of advanced video services. The B-1 utilizes Motorola’s AMM to manage content and streaming between DRAM, Flash memory, local and remote storage in a manner that maximizes system performance while lowering total operating costs.
The Motorola CPS1000 cluster manager is the first component of Motorola’s content propagation system. Designed to optimize storage, streaming and network resources, it improves the fault resiliency of co-located or geographically distributed on demand elements.
The CPS1000 forms part of Motorola’s on demand solution system release 4.0 (SR4.0), which also supports the following functionality: enhanced H.264 support; integration with Tandberg Openstream 4.0; chaptering functionality for creating a DVD-like experience on VOD; and ranged playlists that enable the B-1 to insert targeted ads at any point in on demand content.

Motorola’s SR4.0 is available today, while the next generation on demand media blade (ODM2000) will be available in the first quarter of 2009.
