Samsung BEAT series extends music handset market
Samsung Electronics' two new BEAT series (BEATb and BEATs) music handsets will be targeted at the mid-range segment and will compete with Nokia's XpressMusic series, according to market watchers.
Although Samsung earlier has introduced music handsets targeting different segments and designed various unique high-end music handsets with Bang & Olufsen (B&O), BEAT is Samsung's first music series introduced on its own. Both BEATb (M3510) and BEATs (M3200) are 2G models, BEATb was launched last week and BEATs is expected to be launched in October.
Sony Ericcson, Nokia and Motorola have music-featured handsets with their respective Walkman, XpressMusic and Rokr models and the vendors are seeing stable shipment volumes currently. Samsung's BEAT series is expected to extend the total music handset market, the sources noted.
Samsung BEATb and BEATs have complete music functionality: including Samsung's audio technology DNSe (Digital Natural Sound engine) to emphasize 3D sound and deep bass resonance; an auto equalizer to automatically tuned to the best setting based on genre; and the music recognition function which works with Shazam so that users are able to upload a melody to a server and track down the music.
In addition, BEAT series have a built-in Motion Play function enables users to control music motions to play, pause, select and mute the songs.
With new rivals from Samsung, Nokia is also planning to introduce its first touch screen music handset (5800) that will include the Nokia Comes With Music service. The 5800 will first be launched in the UK in October and then introduced to Europe and Asia-Pacific area in 2009, the sources added.
