Taiwan market: HTC to cooperate with FET to launch Touch Pro smartphone in October
After cooperating with Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) and Taiwan Mobile (TWM) for its Diamond and Victor (HTC P3702)models, High Tech Computer (HTC) is planning to work with Far EasTone Telecommunications (FET) to offer the first customized version of its Touch Pro smartphone, expected to launch in October, according to market sources.
Most specifications of the HTC Touch Pro are similar to those of Diamond and Victor, with the major difference being the addition of a sliding QWERTY keyboard. The 2.8-inch touch screen handset will be powered by a Qualcomm MSM7201a 528MHz processor and support 3.5G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS. Recommended pricing is set at NT$26,900 (US$837).
However, the sources pointed out that HTC's cooperation with TWM and FET this year has put strain on its long-term relationship with CHT. Whether HTC will work with CHT for another new model, the Touch Viva, will be the key for improving their relationship.
The sources added that HTC will work with 7-11 to offer a low-priced 2G Touch Viva model, for pre-order at NT$11,900. HTC expects to ship two million units of the Touch Viva in the Asia-Pacific region in 2008, with the Taiwan market to account for 1% of total sales.
