10,000 Employees Volunteer on Motorola’s Global Day of Service
Motorola volunteers in 45 countries support more than 300 community organizations, with a focus on environmental sustainability
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – For the third year in a row, Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) employees around the world will take a half day off on Wednesday, Oct. 15, to volunteer in their communities. This year’s Global Day of Service, themed “Green & Global,” will engage 10,000 Motorola employees in 45 countries and emphasize the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
“We are celebrating our rich heritage of community service with a special focus on building brighter, ‘greener’ futures for the communities where Motorola employees work and live,” said Karen Tandy, senior vice president, Motorola Public Affairs and Communications. “Hand in hand with our community partners around the world, Motorola is working to provide sustainable solutions for improved education, social services and the environment.”
The Global Day of Service extends the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability. In addition to Motorola’s ongoing efforts to improve the environmental profile of its products, the company has reduced the carbon footprint of its operations by 25 percent over the last seven years and offers or participates in mobile device recycling programs in 69 countries.
New eco-friendly components to the Global Day of Service include:
Working through Carbonfund.org, the Motorola Foundation will arrange to plant a tree in honor of each employee volunteer, reducing the carbon footprint of the event. When an employee reuses a Motorola T-shirt from a previous company event, a second tree will be planted.
Thousands of employees will participate in an in-office philanthropic effort benefiting the Protect-an-Acre campaign, sponsored by Conservation International. Employee donations will help protect forests and curb climate change.
Green education lesson plans developed by Motorola will be offered to school children from Chicago to China with a focus on renewable energy. Through a hands-on project, the students will build a small solar car.
