Motorola Announces Chicago WiMAX Network Meets Key Technology Milestones for XOHM™ Launch
Motorola's mobile WiMAX infrastructure gets “thumbs-up” for performance, reliability
CHICAGO - WiMAX World 2008 – In advance of the planned commercial deployment of WiMAX technology in Chicago by Sprint’s (NYSE:S) XOHM business unit, Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced that its WiMAX infrastructure has passed network acceptance tests vital to the provision of mobile broadband service to Chicagoland residents and businesses.
Motorola passed XOHM’s rigorous technology acceptance tests and nearly 600 Motorola WiMAX base stations are on the air and ready for commercial service. Sprint announced its selection of WiMAX technology in 2006 and awarded Motorola the Chicago market in early 2007. Since that time Motorola achieved several milestones leading up to today’s announcement:
December 2006 – Completed first data session in the XOHM labs
September 2007 – Demonstrated mobile WiMAX handoff to reporters and industry analysts on a cruise down the Chicago River, providing a glimpse of the capabilities of next-generation broadband
October 2007 – Completed first data session on the live XOHM mobile WiMAX network between XOHM markets and across vendor platforms
April 2008 – Completed successful interoperability certification testing with multiple commercial device vendors
"This is a major step toward launch readiness, and XOHM is extremely pleased with the performance of Motorola’s mobile WiMAX network," said Atish Gude, senior vice president, mobile broadband operations for Sprint XOHM. "The collaboration with Motorola will help bring the vision of open networks to reality."
"We’re very close to crossing the goal line here in Chicago,” said Fred Wright, senior vice president, Motorola Home & Networks Mobility. "Our collaboration with XOHM shows that wireless broadband with fully mobile capability is a reality and will offer consumers untethered Internet access that will spur all kinds of new service innovations."
Motorola is a global leader in delivering mobile WiMAX technologies, with 22 contracts for commercial WiMAX systems with customers in 17 countries. Motorola’s WiMAX business for contract deployments, trials, and other customer engagements covers 47 countries worldwide.
