Motorola Delivers High Security WLANs Through Access Points With Built-in AirDefense Sensing Technology
First products from acquisition to integrate AirDefense’s dedicated WIPS Sensing into Motorola’s All-Wireless Enterprise
SAN JOSE, Calif. — Oct. 21, 2008 — Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced it has significantly enhanced wireless network security by providing a built-in, hardware-based wireless intrusion prevention system (WIPS) sensor in its enterprise-grade wireless LAN (WLAN) access points (APs). The integrated product debut follows last month’s announcement of Motorola’s acquisition of AirDefense, Inc., a leading WLAN security provider and former Motorola OEM partner for more than three years.
Combining Motorola’s WLAN intellectual property with the industry-leading AirDefense WIPS into a single platform delivers significantly improved security compared to legacy time-slicing WIPS approaches and minimizes hardware and wiring costs. Motorola’s existing AP-5131 and AP-7131 customers can integrate AirDefense best-in-class WIPS into their WLAN infrastructure with a simple software upgrade to these multi-radio access point platforms.
“Global enterprises today, more than ever, are turning to recognizable names in WLAN infrastructure and security, because reliability and trustworthiness of products is important in a changing economic climate,” said Paul Brooks, director of global information security for Ahold. “Motorola’s acquisition of AirDefense perfectly complements its innovative WLAN infrastructure product portfolio and will benefit customers worldwide.”
The multi-radio Motorola AP-5131 (802.11 abg) and AP-7131 (802.11abgn) with integrated, hardware-based WIPS provides enterprises with a new option that does not require the traditional three-layer solution of wired, followed by overlay wireless followed by overlay WIPS. By offering a cost-effective, integrated solution that enables businesses to secure their networks against wireless attacks and comply with regulatory and industry requirements, Motorola’s Enterprise Mobility business is making wireless networks easier to deploy, secure and manage.
“Worldwide, business demand for seamless security in all-wireless enterprise environments is steadily increasing,” said Sujai Hajela, vice president and general manager of Enterprise WLAN, Motorola Enterprise Mobility business. “Motorola and AirDefense have already hit the ground running and are ready to offer our customers around the world streamlined secure enterprise networks at the lowest total cost of ownership.”
Motorola AirDefense 5131 and 7131 APs with WIPS use dedicated radios for sensing and avoid the performance-challenged, time-slicing technique currently available from other wireless infrastructure vendors. Motorola AirDefense all-in-one hardware offers full-time sensing that provides the highest degree of security and forensics. Time-slicing provides only a snapshot of the wireless environment, as the AP can only perform one job at a time – either security monitoring or wireless access – leaving the wireless network vulnerable any time wireless clients are connected. Providing embedded best-in-class dedicated wireless intrusion prevention and detection is another example of the commitment Motorola has to delivering gap-free, all-wireless solutions.
Enterprise WLAN is part of Motorola’s portfolio of innovative wireless broadband solutions and services that complement and complete IP networks. Delivering IP coverage to virtually all spaces both indoors and outdoors, the portfolio includes fixed broadband, mesh and Enterprise WLAN solutions for private and public networks that, together, truly deliver the wireless enterprise.
