AirTies selects Opera for new High Definition IP set-top box

Opera Software today announced that AirTies, the rapidly growing, Turkey-based developer of wireless quad-play products for Europe, Asia and emerging markets, has selected Opera 9.5 for Devices for its new set-top box, Air 7120. Air 7120 is the state-of-the-art High Definition IP set-top-box with distinctive design and excellent wireless capabilities. AirTies plans to launch the in-home bound Air 7120 primarily across Europe, Asia and Middle East.

Opera 9.5 for Devices will serve as the presentation engine on the Air 7120, allowing developers to quickly and easily create user interfaces and other applications using Web technology such as HTML and CSS. Opera will also lend its Web browsing capabilities to the Air 7120, providing a means for users to access Web content from their TVs. With Opera Widgets, Air 7120 users can additionally access Web content in the form of small applications available directly from the home screens of their set-top boxes.

“With 140,000 new customers each month, we are experiencing phenomenal growth both domestically and internationally, which we intend to maintain with valuable partnerships. The launch of the Air 7120 represents our first cooperation with Opera Software. When we investigated adding the support of generic browsers on our STB, Opera came on top with its performance and robustness. Due to its extensive deployment in both IPTV and retail markets, we decided to integrate first with Opera.” said Metin Taskin, CTO, AirTies.

Opera and AirTies will provide a demo of Opera running on Air 7120 during IPTV World Forum in Dubai. Visit AirTies’ exhibit at Booth #31 to witness the first joint venture from AirTies and Opera. “AirTies is a very interesting partner for Opera, namely because of the remarkable growth they’ve experienced since their inception in 2004. They have a strong presence in home networking as well as IPTV, and they have a unique edge with wireless products. Opera is part of their strategy to reach more consumers in Europe,” said Jon von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software. “AirTies opens the doors for Opera to expand into Turkey and EMEA, one of the world’s fastest growing broadband markets.”
