Korean CMOS image sensor maker expands in China white-box handset market
Seti, a Korea-based CMOS image sensor maker, has succeeded in expanding its CMOS image sensor market share in China to 50%, according to market watchers. Seti's monthly shipments of VGA-resolution CMOS image sensors for white-box handsets in China have climbed to 10 million units, putting pressure on OmniVision, according to the watchers.
In addition to handset applications, Seti has secured orders for notebook and consumer electronics products since the second half of 2008, indicated market sources, noting that the supplier has used competitive pricing to attract more customers. Seti reduced ASPs for VGA-resolution CMOS image sensors to below US$1 in June in an attempt to aggressively extend its presence in the China handset market.
South Korea-based foundry Dongbu HiTek, which specializes in the production of CMOS image sensors, has been Seti's major foundry-service provider, according to industry sources.
