LGE to cooperate with Taiwan companies for Windows Mobile smartphones

LG Electronics (LGE) has announced a strategic alliance with Microsoft and is expected to introduce Windows Mobile handsets in the future.

Taiwan handset makers said LGE is looking for two Windows Mobile smartphone ODM partners and has had discussions with Taiwan makers. Arima Communications, Compal Communications and Foxconn International Holdings (FIH) are on the list of candidates, with shipments expected to begin towards the end of 2009.

LGE is likely to adopt Qualcomm's 3G platform, for which Foxconn has experience mass producing smartphones for i-mate, while Compal Communications is also set to ship related products to Hewlett-Packard (HP), according to industry sources.

In other news, the sources added that the Symbian Foundation is set to move to open source next year, and Samsung and LGE may introduce their first Android handsets in mid-2009, bringing more opportunities for Taiwan handset OEMs.
