Spanish City Invests in MOTOMESH™ Duo Wireless Broadband Network

Citizens to benefit from real-time access to data at reduced rates

Ascó, Catalonia – 11. November 2008 – The city of Ascó has installed Catalonia’s first municipal meshed wireless broadband network throughout the entire city, bringing cost-effective, high-speed internet access to local government and citizens. Motorola’s Canopy 400 series point-to-multipoint wireless broadband solution is providing the backhaul link, extending the network to areas with non line of site coverage.

Supplied by and installed by Motorola partner Eurona, the MOTOMESH™ Duo solution is designed to meet increasing bandwidth demands from municipal users, mobile businesses and residential subscribers. The system is also being used to automate the control of traffic through the city’s network of narrow streets, which are limited to residential access.

MOTOMESH Duo is a high-performance, dual radio wireless broadband solution that delivers real-time data at speeds of 10Mbps and significantly reduces the backhaul costs of wide scale networks. The network is able to support a broad range of applications including voice over IP (VoIP), video surveillance and location-based services while meeting stringent return on investment targets and providing optimum economic flexibility.

Spanning an area of approximately 74 square kilometres, the city of Ascó is home to some 1600 inhabitants, many of whom work at the nearby nuclear power station. The surrounding terrain yields an abundance of almonds, olives and grapes to support a thriving agricultural industry.

The meshed wireless network enables Ascó and its citizens to harness the power of innovative broadband technology to serve a wide range of needs. Residents and businesses throughout the city can now benefit from high-speed, mobile internet access virtually anywhere, at any time.

The system is comprised of intelligent access points that connect the wireless network to the wired world. Wireless mesh routers deliver internet access to users and act as router repeaters for other access points in the network. This creates a self-forming, self-healing network that is able to withstand high levels of interference and provide superior performance.

“The MOTOMESH Duo units are small in size, lightweight and have low power consumption, allowing them to be mounted in a short period of time on buildings and street lights - with minimal visual impact. Additional units can easily be added to the network to cater for increased demand,” explained Jaume Sanpera, director general at Eurona.

Pau Daniel Serrano, deputy mayor noted: “Traditionally, our city has been known for its nuclear plant. We also want to be recognised for our innovative communications technology.”

In addition to making Ascó more attractive to citizens and companies, the network can also be used to enhance the delivery and maintenance of municipal services such as public transport, roads and utilities.
