Sprint Nextel Statement on the Federal Communications Commission's Decision to Grant Sprint's Waiver to Remain on the Interleaved Channels of the 800

OVERLAND PARK, Kan.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Below is a statement from Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) on the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) decision to grant Sprint Nextel's waiver to remain on the interleaved portion of the 800 MHz spectrum band. The statement is attributable to Sprint.

Sprint commends and appreciates the FCC's decision to allow Sprint to gradually vacate the interleaved 800 MHz spectrum in stages based on the region-by-region progress made by public safety licensees in retuning their systems to their new spectrum home. This phased transition will ensure that this spectrum is turned over to public safety in a timely manner while enabling Sprint to support the 800 MHz reconfiguration and to continue to provide best-ever service levels to our iDEN customers.

All the stakeholders have tirelessly worked together to significantly advance the 800 MHz reconfiguration and eliminate the risk of interference for public safety communicators. As a result of these efforts, we are making great progress. Phase I, which involves 1,200 licensees, is 97 percent complete. For Phase II, 265 licensees have completed the retuning process and approximately two-thirds of all non-border-area public safety licensees are at various stages of implementation.

Sprint remains ready and committed to working with public safety licensees to complete rebanding as quickly as possible and with minimal disruption to all licensees. At the same time, we continue to invest in the Nextel National Network, offer a robust portfolio of devices, with new devices launching in 2009, and remain committed to supporting Nextel Direct Connect(R), our industry-leading push-to-talk service.
