Symbian reaches 40 million mobile phone shipments in Japan

TOKYO, Japan, 20 November, 2008 - Symbian Limited, developer and licensor of Symbian OS™, the market-leading open operating system for mobile phones, today announced that over 40 million mobile phones based on Symbian OS have shipped in Japan up until the end of September 2008.

In the first half of 2008, 18 mobile phone models based on Symbian OS shipped across Japan, up 12.5% over the same period last year. To date, a total of 94 mobile phone models based on Symbian OS have launched in Japan by six Symbian customers: Fujitsu, Mitsubishi, Nokia, Motorola, Sharp and Sony Ericsson.

The first 3G Symbian OS-based mobile phone began shipping in Japan in 2003 and within three years - to end of June 2006 - the total number of shipments reached the 10 million mark. Since then, there has been a continuous growth in shipment figures for Symbian mobile phones in Japan, resulting in an overall total of 40 million shipments at the end of September 2008.

Toshio Miki, Associate Senior Vice President, Managing Director of Communication Device Development Department, NTT DOCOMO, INC. commented: "The robustness, security and ease of customisation of Symbian OS contributes to a short development time and reduced development cost, which I believe has served as the driving force for the total shipments of over 40 million mobile phones based on Symbian OS in Japan. NTT DOCOMO plans to further contribute to and work with Symbian OS in future."

Haruhiko Hisa, President, Symbian Japan, said: "I am pleased to celebrate this milestone on our 10 year anniversary. This is the result of a strong and ever-growing ecosystem of innovative partners, including the network operators, handset manufactures and developers. We look forward to a bright future as we continue to revolutionise the next generation of mobile phones."
