CHT to transfer 30 WiMAX base stations to Global Mobile for commercial operation

Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) has signed an agreement to transfer the 30 WiMAX base stations and other related equipment it built for the M-Taiwan (mobile Taiwan) project to WiMAX licensee Global Mobile for commercial operation.

Construction of the 30 WiMAX base stations, purchased from Alcatel-Lucent, will be completed at the end of this year, and CHT plans to hand over those base stations to Global Mobile in early 2009 after verification, according to CHT chairman Shyue-ching Lu.

While the financial details of the transfer deal were not disclosed, CHT revealed that total costs for the 30 base stations and other equipment reached NT$460 million (US$13.69 million), which included NT$210 million in government subsidies.

In other news, Global Mobile said it plans to increase its capital by NT$1.1-1.9 billion in 2009 to strengthen its finances for the launch of its WiMAX services slated for the second half of 2009.
