Ericsson to build in Africa a national optical broadband network access

The company Ericsson announced the conclusion with 21st Century Technologies (Nigeria) contract for the supply, construction and system integration of national optical broadband access network designed to serve the residential sector. The Treaty requires the implementation of the latest technology gigabit passive optical networking (GPON) Fiber-To-The-Home (FTTH), so that it will be possible to provide the most advanced high-speed services.

According to the supplier, this project represents a breakthrough in the market in West Africa, where mobile communication services are very popular. Network Fiber-To-The-Home will provide broadband access and provide related services such as IPTV, high-speed Internet and IP-telephony. The deployment of the first network segment, which will serve 10 000 homes, will begin in January 2009.

Under the agreement, Ericsson will supply «turnkey» network with deep penetration of fiber (Deep-Fiber Access), including EDA 1500 solution for GPON-networking and optical fiber, including vduvki fiber Ribbonet and Micronet. The Treaty also includes the supply of routers Redback SmartEdge 1200, and IMS-system for the backbone network which will provide transparent access to a wide range of multimedia services. In addition, Ericsson will provide services to design and deploy networks and systems integration.
