HTC to partner with SKT on launch of second HTC smartphone in South Korea

High Tech Computer (HTC) has completed talks with South Korea-based SK Telecom (SKT) for the joint launch of a new HTC smartphone in South Korea in the first quarter of 2009, according to Jack Tong, vice president of HTC Asia.

HTC has been tapping the smartphone market in South Korea since July 2008 when it tied up with SKT for the joint launch of the HTC Touch Dual. However, the new model to be launched early next year has not yet been finalized, Tong said.

Demand as well as competition for smartphones in South Korea is expected to heat up starting April 2009 when the South Korea government drops its controls over regulations pertaining to the wireless Internet platform for interoperability (WIPI), said market watchers in Taiwan.

The removal of the WIPI controls will also encourage other branded handset vendors, including Nokia, RIM (Research in Motion) and Apple, to make inroads into the South Korea market, added the market watchers.

In other news, HTC on December 18 launched its HTC Touch 3G in the Taiwan market in cooperation with Chunghwa Telecom (CHT). HTC expects sales of the HTC Touch 3G to top 100,000 units in Taiwan within one year, Tung revealed.
