LG Electronics’ CTO selected ‘Leader in World Safety’
Seoul, Korea, December 4, 2008 – LG Electronics, a global leader and technology innovator in consumer electronics, today announced that the company’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Dr. Woo Paik has been selected as the winner of ‘Leaders in World Safety’ by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL), one of the most reputable product safety testing and certification organizations in North America.
The award recognizes a person who has set the global standard for safety in new products and this year’s honor is awarded to Dr. Woo Paik. The award ceremony was held on Wednesday, December 3 at LG Twin Towers in Seoul, Korea. Sajeev Jesudas, president of UL International, presented the prize to Dr. Paik on behalf of UL`s CEO, Keith E. Williams. This is the first year UL has issued the “Leaders in World Safety” Award.
“LG has made every effort to offer products and services with quality, safety and sustainability,” said Sajeev Jesudas. “This award highlights Dr. Woo Paik’s contributions and commitment to safety and quality.”
In August 2008, Dr. Paik received a technical Emmy Award from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for the recognition of his outstanding achievements in television and broadcasting.
Dr. Paik, known throughout the industry as the “Father of HDTV,” garnered public attention after a cover story in USA Today on November 17, 1997. He was also inducted into the Consumer Electronics Hall of Fame and the Academy of Digital Television Pioneers in 2004.
Dr. Paik earned his doctorate in electrical and electronics engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Prior to joining LG Electronics in 1998, Paik was Executive Vice President of Technology for the General Instrument Communications Division (now the broadband division of Motorola) and served as Senior Vice President of Technology for Qualcomm, Inc.
