Mobile banking gets easier with S60 5th edition

Faced with today’s uncertain financial climate spreading across the world, many of us are no doubt keeping a closer watch on our spending. And what more convenient way to monitor the health of our bank accounts than over the mobile?

To help out, Scandinavian bank Nordea has just launched in Finland an updated version of its mobile banking application built on the latest S60 5th Edition. Ease and convenience of use are guiding principles for the application. “When a customer logs in they see their account balance straight away and we have now made this even clearer,” explains Teppo Jansson of Nordea. “Another improvement has been to automatically change the phone’s input to numeric to make entry of the user ID and password easier. In the past some users have been inputting these details incorrectly.”

The application now also makes use of S60 5th Edition’s acclaimed touch interface. Nordea has streamlined the application’s user interface and included larger clickable areas with more space around them to help users avoid accidental inputs when using their finger. “The touch interface really creates a much nicer user experience. Interestingly, incorporating touch has also made the whole application easier to use on S60 devices without touch control. The larger space around the buttons makes them easier to select even with a normal cursor,” says Teppo.

Banking anywhere, anytime

The application, called Mobile Netbank is the mobile version of the web-based Netbank service that is free to Nordea Finnish customers. Nordea launched its first mobile banking service back in 1999 using a WAP interface. “WAP gave a very basic look, whereas today Mobile Netbank is very similar to Netbank with excellent Nordea branding. Most mobile users want to be able to check their balance, make new payments and transfer funds between accounts,” explains Teppo.

Nordea says that there are at least 100,000 mobile banking logins per month. Peak mobile usage rates tend to be during the summer vacation period when people are away and want to check their accounts.

Nordea’s experience gives an early indication of the ease of development on the latest S60 5th edition. “We had the new SDK in early September and a few weeks later we had a live application to demonstrate at the London Smartphone Show in October. You can really trust the SDK and what you see on the emulator is identical to what you get on the device itself,” says Teppo.

“Just one version of the application is all that is necessary. We don’t need to do any device-specific tweaking, which lowers the testing and development workload significantly,” Teppo concludes.
